Launch Point (Put-In): A small floating dock located behind the
Air Power Park, 413 W. Mercury Blvd, Hampton, Virginia. The dock is on
Newmarket Creek.
The Air Power Park is located on Mercury Blvd between Armistead Avenue
and LaSalle Avenue and is easier to turn into coming from Armistead. If
you
approach the Park from LaSalle Avenue, you must first pass it and then
swing a U-turn on Mercury before turning right into the Air Power Park.
Gates open about 9 a.m. Loading / Unloading of boats permitted.
Length / Expected Duration: 4 miles plus for sure. The distance
of the day's paddle will depend on the group, weather, etc. Expect
2-3 hours at group speed.
Description:
The Trip: Newmarket Creek is an interesting, twisting, turning water
path
which winds through the heart of Hampton. At times you feel you are
right
up there with the big guys, i.e., traveling I-64 and heading to
Williamsburg or the Coliseum but most of the time you feel you are
paddling
through an undiscovered and unpopulated area of our country.
Description by %: Sheltered water 90%, open water 10%
Features: Bird life, snakes in summer, animal life, scenery, exploration.
Recommended for novice through experienced paddlers.
Stopping Point: Blue Bird Gap Farm which had a picnic area and public
restroom facilities the last time I was there.
Low Tide. Hopefully the floating dock will permit us to enter and
leave our kayaks fairly easily even at mean low. I wanted to get this
notice out quickly once I heard from Park Personnel today and haven't
had
time to check the tide for Sunday, 9 March.
Drain pipes: Newmarket Creek winds completely through Hampton to
Roanoke Avenue. It would be a longer paddle to explore its length,
and
it's a fun paddle. The problem is we'd have to portage two or three
large
drain or water pipes which cross the creek at various points. The portages
are a little tricky but the majority of our group may want to tackle
them.
We can make that decision when the time comes.
Estimate between 4 - 7 miles total.
Directions to Launch Point:
From 664 or I-64 Norfolk: I-64 West, off at Mercury Blvd.
Follow to Air Power Park.
Air Power Park is at the end of Mercury, near the La Salle Ave overpass.
Important Notes: Basic safety equipment (pump, paddle
float) needed. PFD required. Please bring snacks, hydration
and appropriate clothing for the season. Be sure to dress for the
weather!
The morning of the paddle, Park Personnel will open the Park's double-wide
gates about 9 a.m. The gates are located to the left of Museum's building
and, once unlocked, we can use the road for unloading our kayaks behind
the
Museum. However, after the kayaks have been unloaded, we are
to remove the cars
from that location and park them in front of the building for the duration
of our trip.
